dish drying mat

This may be up there with the toilet brush post in terms of strangeness 😂. But I’m using this blog to share allll of the things I love and use…regardless of how practical and unfussy.

Living in tiny spaces for the past 7ish years I have become dependent upon certain items to make tiny living a success. And this dish drying mat is one of them. We haven’t had a dishwasher or space to have a drying rack so I have learned to make do with a mat.

You might wonder why not just a towel since the mat takes up space. And trust me, I know that when you’re living tiny, you think of every single item you bring into your house and whether or not you have a spot for it. Yes, a towel can do the trick. But a drying mat absorbs the water from a load of dishes and when you cook most of your meals at home, that’s a lot of dishes and a lot of water. Our butcher block countertop got ruined from how much moisture sat where we dried our dishes and we had to get a new one. The drying mat helps to absorb the moisture and prevent it from seeping into the countertop. A huge win for us.

We live in 400 sq ft now, and we don’t have a lot of counter space so we often put the drying mat on top of the gas stove and dry our dishes there. The mat makes that possible. A towel wouldn’t hold up on top of the grates.

So, yes, it takes up space. But it’s easy to fold up and put under the sink or in a drawer and it’s much better at doing its job than a plain old towel. Team drying mat over here.

Side note: I love cloth mats over silicone because I can throw them in the wash. Having two or three is nice so you can wash them often but still always have one to use. Silicone mats can get icky and kind of creep me out 😆. Personal opinion.
