Do you gua sha? I’ve had this tool for years now and used it occasionally but started doing this routine every morning a few months ago and I look forward to it. What once was an ancient Chinese medical practice, gua sha has become a mainstream beauty practice as explained here in this article.
I love this routine for how it feels. The stone is cool in the morning and I love putting it on my face to depuff and massage my skin. As I continue to massage the tool warms up from my hands and skin and it no longer feels cool. At that point, I’m more focused on the technique. It’s soothing to massage my skin first thing in the morning after I rinse my face with water and put my DIY serum on. If I wake up puffy, this visibly reduces it. But otherwise, daily, it’s more about making my skin feel massaged and smooth and ready for the day.
It’s also an awesome tool to travel with because it’s so small. I’ve taken it on quite a few trips and it helps so much in relieving tension in my neck from sleeping in a different bed. I also like to use it to massage my legs and feet if we’ve done a lot of walking or hiking. At home, I use my foam roller but that’s not easy to travel with so this is a nice alternative.
There are different types of gua sha tools. I got my jade tool here but you can buy them anywhere. The video I linked above in this article explains the difference between the types. Credo Beauty sells a jade one, a rose quartz one, and this stainless steel one. All are designed to have a contouring, firming, and lifting effect on the skin. They also make ones for scalp massage. I haven’t tried the different types but want to. Especially the one for the scalp!
