dry brushing

The benefits of dry brushing are written alllll over the internet. Give it a good search and you’ll come up with endless content to read. While there are claims that it will help exfoliate your skin and reduce cellulite, those are not things I have noticed over the years. What I have noticed, and the reason I dry brush every single day, is lymphatic drainage. This is an obvious one for me because I have poor lymphatic circulation so dry brushing has been a game changer in keeping my lymph system flowing smoothly. But even if you don’t have issues with your lymphatic system, you should still be dry brushing. This system only drains if it’s prompted by movement or stimulation. If you’re not stimulating it, you will most likely have stagnation.

You don’t have to be intimidated by dry brushing but there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

Your lymphatic system is divided by meridians and you have drainage areas that need to be “opened” before you start dry brushing. Your armpits and groin are the two main areas to open up. I watched this video ages ago and have used this routine ever since. You can tell how old it is by the quality but the information is good. Start at 4:30 for the tutorial.

This routine doesn’t have to take more than a couple of minutes per day. It’s often recommended to do it before you shower as you’re sluffing off all of those dead skin cells but I do it every night before bed because that’s when I have time and it works great for me. I currently use the short-handled brush pictured above. I prefer a shorter handle as it’s easier to hold on to. A similar one can be found here. But a long-handled one makes getting your backside easier and you don’t have to bend over as much with a long handle. The ones with a handle are also a nice option. It’s all about preference. As long as you rinse your brush every week or so with water and let it air dry, it’ll last you years. Oh, and don’t press too hard. A gentle but firm grip will suffice.

Would love to know if you’ve seen any benefits from dry brushing!
