french butter keeper

What is a French butter keeper you ask? It’s a container that keeps your butter fresh but soft and spreadable without refrigeration. Butter goes in the lid of the container and water in the base so that when you place the lid into the base it creates an airtight seal so your butter stays fresh. I’ve been using my butter keeper for a couple of years now and love it. I only put 1/2 a stick of butter in at a time so that we use it up a little quicker. I’ve found if I do a whole stick and the butter sits for longer than a couple of weeks, it will get funky. Using only 1/2 a stick prevents that from happening.

The key to filling your butter keeper is to let the butter sit on the counter until it’s soft. Place the soft butter in the lid of the keeper and use the back of a spoon to press it down into the lid. You’ll be flipping the lid upside down into the base so you don’t want the butter to fall out. Pressing it down keeps it nice and secure. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 of water into the base and place the lid inside. Easy as pie. Just make sure to switch out the water every few days to keep it fresh.

I got my butter keeper from a friend who makes beautiful pottery. This is her IG. I reached out and asked if she could make me one and am so happy with how it turned out. She is also a full-time volunteer so it felt good to support her “hobby”.

Here are a few on Amazon that I also think are cute. This one, this one, and this one. Etsy has a lot of options as well.

How do you prefer to store your butter?
