a little bit of everything

October 12, 2023

the marie kondo way

My shirt drawer almost always looks like this. But before you think I’m a total type A psycho 😆, I think you should know this is the only drawer that stays that way in my house. Every other drawer starts out this way but for some reason ends up being a disaster that I have to reorganize every few months.

How do I manage to keep this drawer in tip-top condition? Two words. One name. Marie Kondo. I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up when I lived in a 180 sq ft tiny home and never looked back. Marie Kondo shares how to hold on to only what is necessary and makes you happy while at the same time maximizing your space to get the most out of it.

I’ve always loved shoes and clothes and whittling my wardrobe down to the basics was one of the hardest things to do when we went tiny. I designed our tiny house with as much closet space as possible so that I could keep as many clothes as possible but it wasn’t until I learned how to fold my clothes the Marie Kondo way (this video is hilarious 😂) that I started using my closet space most efficiently. And I’ve done it that way ever since. After the tiny house, we lived in a van with even less closet space. And then we rented a bedroom with no closet and all of our clothes were folded in baskets or on bookshelves so folding them efficiently made a huge difference. I imagine this method won’t change for me no matter how big or small my closet gets.

If I could hang every item of clothing I owned aside from my undergarments I would. I love hanging things because then I don’t have to deal with wrinkles. But in small spaces that really isn’t practical so Marie Kondo is where it’s at.
